Beer Recipe Calculator (Batch Scaling)

By Dan Smullen

Found a recipe written for a different batch size than yours? This calculator resizes every ingredient to your target volume in one go, keeping the balance intact. Enter the original and target sizes below.

Scale your recipe

How scaling works

The calculator works out the ratio between the original batch size and yours, then multiplies every ingredient by it. Fermentables, hops and most additions scale straight with volume, so a recipe doubled in size doubles every amount.

Bitterness is the one thing that can drift, because hop utilization depends on gravity and volume. After a big change, check your IBUs with the IBU calculator to be sure the balance still holds.

Scaling up or down

Enter a larger target size to scale a small recipe up to your system, or a smaller one to shrink a commercial-size recipe to a test batch. The maths is the same either way.

Use any units you like as long as you are consistent, since the calculator only multiplies. Pounds stay pounds, grams stay grams.

Frequently asked questions

Does everything scale linearly?

Fermentables, hops and most additions scale straight with batch size, and that is what this calculator does. Bittering can shift slightly because utilization depends on gravity and volume, so check IBUs with the IBU calculator after a big change.

Can I scale down as well as up?

Yes. Enter a smaller target batch size than the original and every amount scales down by the same ratio.

What units can I use?

Any, as long as you are consistent. The calculator multiplies each amount by the batch-size ratio, so pounds stay pounds and grams stay grams.
