Blackjack Drinking Game: Rules and What Beer to Bring

Blackjack is the easiest casino game to turn into a drinking game because the win/loss moments already come fast, one hand every 30 to 60 seconds. No chips or real money needed, this version runs on beer and basic blackjack rules you probably already half-know.

What You Need

  • A standard 52-card deck (2+ decks shuffled together for bigger groups)
  • 3 to 7 players, one of whom deals
  • Everyone’s beer of choice, a lighter beer works better for longer sessions since you will be drinking a lot
  • Something to track who is “dealer” for the round, a chip or coin passed around works fine

Basic Blackjack Rules (Quick Refresher)

Each player is dealt two cards and tries to get as close to 21 as possible without going over, competing against the dealer’s hand, not each other. Number cards count at face value, face cards count as 10, and an Ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand more. On your turn you can “hit” (take another card) or “stand” (keep your current total). Beat the dealer’s total without busting over 21 and you win the hand; tie and it’s a push.

The Drinking Rules

  1. Bust (go over 21): Drink twice, once for going over and once for wasting the deal
  2. Lose to the dealer: Drink once
  3. Push (tie with the dealer): Everyone still in the hand drinks once, including the dealer
  4. Blackjack (Ace + 10-value card on the deal): Everyone else at the table drinks twice
  5. Dealer busts: The dealer finishes their beer or takes three drinks, loser’s choice
  6. 21 exactly after hitting (not a natural blackjack): Pick one other player to drink once

Rotating the Dealer

Pass the dealer role clockwise after every three hands, or after any hand where the dealer busts, whichever comes first. This keeps any one person from dominating the drink-giving side of the game for too long.

What Beer Actually Works Here

Because this game moves fast and the drink counts stack up (a bad run of hands can mean 4 to 6 drinks in ten minutes), skip the imperial stouts and high-ABV IPAs. A session lager, pilsner, or light ale in the 4 to 5% range keeps the game fun instead of ending it early. If you want a non-alcoholic option in rotation for anyone driving or pacing themselves, our best non-alcoholic beers guide has solid picks that still feel like part of the game.
