I used to really enjoy Redhook beers, but over the last couple of years they seem to have really increased their usage of domestic Tettnang hops, rendering the beers nearly undrinkable. I get an overpowering "musty-wet-straw" flavor, especially in their flagship ESB. Lots of other breweries seem to be following this lead, and this flavor is what I'm talking about when you see "tastes like Redhook" in my notes. Too bad...they used to be one of the best.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
13.5 points overall
-
Ballard Bitter IPA
Style 5 - English-style Pale Ale
- 10.5 points - Beer #14-989, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, May 19, 1995
Supposedly reformulated as an IPA recently. Golden, reasonably clear, low carbonation. Same stinkin' hop aroma as before. Bitter, but Tettnangs overwhelm.
- 12 points - Beer #12-891, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, April 27, 1995
Golden, moderate carbonation, good white head. Fruity aroma. Redhook neo-house flavor. Rotten Tettnangs ruin what ought to be a great beer.
-
Black Hook Porter
Style 9 - Porter
- 14 points - Beer #9-646, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, December 13, 1994
Deep red...not black at all. Thick brown head. Malty nose, some black malt. Tastes like Redhook Dark. House flavor, also in aroma.
-
Blond Ale (bottled)
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 14.5 points - Beer #34-2980, 1st Wines and Spirits, Allouez WI, July 19, 1998
Golden, high carbonation, thick head. Fruity wheat aroma. Light, lots of wheat flavor, a little metallic.
-
Blueline Honey Stout
Style 23 - Specialty Beer
- 12.5 points - Beer #11-761, The Depot, Concord CA, February 6, 1995
Very stout-looking. Sharp aroma...slightly musty. Black flavor...licorice? Some bitterness.
-
ESB (bottled)
Style 7 - English Bitter
- 15 points - Beer #25-2055, Moloka`i Airport Bar, Ho`olehua HI, April 21, 1997
Amber, clear, fairly high carbonation, no head. Fresh fruity hop aroma, only a hint of the nasty old smell. Good body, bitter enough. Long fairly bitter finish, sticks* a little.
* Feels like you can't quite finish swallowing.
-
ESB
Style 7 - English Bitter
- 13 points - Beer #10-730, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, January 27, 1995
Amber-pale, looks flat. Tettnang aroma. Tettnang flavor, but not as bad as I remember. (See above.)
-
Hefe-Weizen (bottled)
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 14.5 points - Beer #19-1506, Willow Glen Liquors, San Jose CA, June 13, 1996
Yellow-opaque, fairly high carbonation, good head. Spicy-floral hop aroma. Good wheat flavor, some bitterness. Hop flavor dominates finish. I'd like to taste more wheat throughout. Thanks to Paris Cunningham for bringing this beer to Hawai`i for me!
-
Märzen
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 12.5 points - Beer #14-1000, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, June 7, 1995
Amber, clear, low carbonation, OK head. Pretty clean aroma, hint of hops. Nice malt and bitterness, followed quickly by the Redhook House Flavor. Bah.
-
Rye Beer
Style 23 - Specialty Beer
- 18 points - Beer #7-437, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, October 8, 1994
Yellow opaque. Great white head...looks like a Hefeweizen. Sweet wheat aroma with significant citrus component. Very pleasant. Very clean flavors, again much like Hefeweizen. Tastes a touch more dark than a Hefe.
-
Wheat Hook
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 15 points - Beer #14-1066, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, June 24, 1995
Dark yellow opaque, thin head. Smells like grapefruit. Wheaty-malty flavor, wheat finish.
-
Winterhook
Style 23 - Specialty Beer
- 11 points - Beer #9-661, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, December 26, 1994
Red-amber, thick white head. Tettnang aroma and flavor. Thin. Unpleasant. Not very bitter at all. Low carbonation, could be the system here.
