I taught my dad (seen here savoring a Maß at the Hofbräuhaus) how to brew his own a few years ago...here are some of the results. Hmmm.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
13.5 points overall
Style 23 - Specialty Beer
- 15.5 points - Beer #31-2544, at the brewery, March 25, 1998
Dark amber, lots of yeast, thick head. Lots of rye aroma and a hint of hops. Thick, big nutty rye flavor, fairly bitter. Some yeast flavor. Drying. Lingering rye/bitter finish. Brewed 3/14/98, OG 1.062, FG 1.022, 45 IBU (Columbus), 5.3% abv. Not bad for the first all-grain batch!
Wheat Beer (bottled)
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 11 points - Beer #29-2382, Kaunakakai HI, at home, January 9, 1998
Amber, pretty opaque, very high carbonation, thick head. Smells a little caramelly, but still has that rubbery odor. Good body, high carbonation. A little autolyzed, some cloves? Hints of malt very late. I need to brew a batch with him so we can pin down this trouble. Maybe liquid yeast would help.
