Good lagers here...Rick Garvin says "If there's a bad beer here, I'm walking home." The brewhouse is out in the open, right behind the bar, and there was a batch of Dark brewing while we were there.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
16.0 points overall
-
Dark
Style 13 - German Dark Lager
- 13 points - Beer #6-364, at the brewery, July 5, 1994
Shade darker than Märzen. Aroma not assertive at all. Smooth. Caramel. Bitter, but not like the Pils. Maybe I expected a dark version of the Pils.
-
DeGroen's Dunkles
Style 13 - German Dark Lager
- 15 points - Beer #36-3576, Great American Beer Festival XIX, Denver CO, October 5, 2000
Light brown, thick head. Faintly toasty aroma. Medium body, big toasty malt flavor, drying.
-
DeGroen's Rauchbock
Style 20 - Smoked Beer
- 18 points - Beer #36-3577, Great American Beer Festival XIX, Denver CO, October 5, 2000
Brown, thick head. Intensely smoky aroma. Medium body, big smoke flavor that lingers forever.
- 15 points - Beer #20-1598, Great American Beer Festival XV, Denver CO, September 26, 1996
Amber. Nice smoky nose. Smoky-sweet flavor.
-
Märzen
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 19 points - Beer #6-363, at the brewery, July 5, 1994
Amber and foamy. (Looks like a trend, after the Pils.) Aroma? Hard to tell. We're right by the open brewhouse, and he just added hops. Malty? Spicy? Big. Chewy. Fine balance. Good bitterness.
-
Pils
Style 15 - Classic Pilsener
- 18.5 points - Beer #6-362, at the brewery, July 5, 1994
Yellow and foamy. Good hop nose, but faint. Bitter! Wonderful body. Extremely bitter.
-
Weizen
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 14.5 points - Beer #6-365, at the brewery, July 5, 1994
Big head. Yellow. Cloudy. Odd phenolic smell. Clove, but "burnt". (?) Bananas (!) Phenols come through in the flavor too. Big banana flavor. Not my favorite style. (Note: Re-reading this on October 18, 1996, I can't help but remark on how my taste has changed! If these notes are anywhere near accurate, this beer would probably be a Hall of Famer now. So much for objectivity.)
