Pretty standard Gordon Biersch format, with fantastic island specialties from the kitchen. Nice big place, right by the passenger ship docks. A controlling interest in the company was sold to a Las Vegas casino in November 1995...the new team opened Barley's Casino and Brewing in Henderson NV in early 1996. Gordon Biersch was planning to open an outlet in the Honolulu International Airport, but this hadn't happened by the end of February 1996.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
14.0 points overall
Style 12 - Bock
- 14 points - Beer #25-2035, 1997 Kona Brewers Festival, Kailua-Kona HI, March 15, 1997
Golden hazy, good head. Fresh hop aroma. Sweet, fair amount of alcohol. Pretty clean finish.
Style 13 - German Dark Lager
- 14 points - Beer #16-1246, at the brewery, January 14, 1996
Red, good white head, some haze. Brown malt aroma. Thick, smooth. Good brown malt flavor. Clean finish.
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 17 points - Beer #16-1244, at the brewery, January 14, 1996
Golden, brilliant. Low but OK carbonation. Grainy aroma. Smooth, malty, not quite as sweet as, say, Palo Alto's. St.Louis Blues vs. New York Rangers on ESPN...first hockey I've seen in months!
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 13.5 points - Beer #16-1245, at the brewery, January 14, 1996
Amber, very very low carbonation, big firm white head. Coffee nose?!? ...with some hops. Very slight coffee flavor. Thick. Bitter finish...clean enough.
Style 15 - Classic Pilsener
- 11.5 points - Beer #25-2013, Island Brews, Gate 12, Honolulu International Airport, February 11, 1997
Golden, good head, moderate carbonation. GB house aroma, not Saaz-hoppy as expected. Sweet, a little sticky. Fair hop flavor, but not at all in balance. Not even a little bitter. Tettnangs? Different hops would make this a very good beer.
