Willett's Brewing
Last updated: May 25, 1993
902 Main Street
Napa CA 94559
Opened 1988.
Closed 1994.
Brewer: Brian Hunt.
750 bbl annual capacity.
Re-opened as Downtown Joe's Brewery & Restaurant. Same beer, but they completely removed the fun friendly atmosphere, including the enormous beer can collection that used to be behind the bar and on the walls. Now it's more like a hotel bar...very sterile. Too bad. We used to run into the folks from Brown Street Brewery here, back when Brown Street was still a brewery.
Directions: 80 East to 29 North to Napa. Exit at First Street and head east into town. First Street winds around and changes its name along the way, but follow it all the way to the end at Main Street. Willett's will be across Main Street, directly in front of you.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
13.0 points overall
-
Ace High Cream Ale
Style 16 - American Lager
- 11.5 points - Beer #1-53, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
Good color, no bubbles. A bit darker than the Lager. Not much aroma. Quite bitter. Light body.
-
Golden Thistle
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 14 points - Beer #1-56, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
Very nice amber and great head. Lots of odors...can't tell what they are! As advertised, it's a hop bomb. Good thick body. Not sure about this one.
-
Munich Lager
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 16 points - Beer #1-57, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
Amber, thin head. Definite European aromatic character. Good beer! Thick, with just the right hops. Good beer! I'll have a pint...
-
Old Magnolia Stout
Style 11 - Stout
- 13 points - Beer #1-58, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
Very dark red, but not black at all. Fairly burnt aroma. Thick, sweet. Black malts could be upped.
-
Tail Waggin' Ale
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 14 points - Beer #1-54, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
More of the same. A little darker than the Ace High. Better aroma...hops starting to come through. Much better mouthfeel. Plenty of smooth body to carry the hops.
-
Victory Ale
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 12.5 points - Beer #1-55, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
Dark amber. Not brown...or is it? It's very dark out here... Some hop aroma, some dark malt. Flavor and body very much like the Tail Waggin' Ale with a bit of dark malt thrown in.
-
Willy's Lager
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 10 points - Beer #1-52, at the brewery, May 25, 1993
Good color, no bubbles. Not much aroma. Very very light-bodied and a little too bitter. Gerry liked it a lot. I didn't.
