My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
14.0 points overall
-
Doppelbock
Style 12 - Bock
- 16 points - Beer #9-627, at the brewery, November 28, 1994
Dark brown opaque. Not much head. Roasty aroma. Burnt flavor. No hint of alcohol. I'd call it a Porter if it were an ale...
-
Beer #31-2528, Lyon's Brewery, Dublin CA, December 18, 1993
DARK brown. CHOCOLATE. Fine body and head...VNI.
- 14 points - Beer #31-2505, 1992 Pacific Coast Tasting of Christmas Beers IV, Oakland CA, December 12, 1992
Closer to a Porter than a Doppelbock. Don claims it's 10%, which is a surprise. It's a good Porter (with lager yeast). (Note on 3/23/98: Jeez...transcribing these notes five years later graphically illustrates the learning curve!)
-
Hefe Weizen (bottled)
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 14.5 points - Beer #27-2231, Willow Glen Liquors, San Jose CA, September 10, 1997
Yellow opaque, big white head. Spicy, yeasty aroma. Good body, big carbonation bite. Smoky and fairly bitter. Vague hints of clove and banana. Finishes pretty clean. Here are some excerpts from the label: "Premium lager" (authentic Bavarian Hefeweizens are ales). "Malted barley, hops, yeast, water" (in general, wheat beers are expected to contain some wheat). "Unfiltered Bavarian style wheat beer" (OK, it is actually unfiltered).

Hefeweizen
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 6.5 points - Beer #9-625, at the brewery, November 28, 1994
Hazy yellow, high carbonation. Translucent, not opaque. Rubbery, chlorophenolic aroma, with rotten fruit. Not quite rancid. Body, head, carb OK. Maybe a bad batch. Served with lemon...bah!
-
Lager
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 17 points - Beer #9-623, at the brewery, November 28, 1994
Pale amber. Smells like straw. Creamy. Smooth. Good flavor balance...not as sharp as the Pilsner. Gold Medal, 1994 GABF.
-
Maibock
Style 12 - Bock
- 14 points - Beer #12-865, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, April 18, 1995
Clear. Gold-amber. Thin head. Bready aroma...OK malt. Hi-octane. Good balance...on the hoppy side. Sharp.
- 13.5 points - Beer #6-318, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, May 7, 1994
Amber, fizzy. Some spicy hop aroma, some malt. Sweet malty flavor. Hops not prominent as in aroma. Astringent.
- 14 points - Beer #12-842, Buffalo Bill's, Hayward CA, April 4, 1994
Amber, clear, very low carbonation and head. Very nice hop aroma, subtle malt and some alcohol. Very malty flavor indeed, although initial contact seemed a bit thin. Lots of..."pancake" flavor?!? Last night's Kings/Oilers game on TV...one fan has the California license plate "PNLTY 33". (This is funny if you're a hockey fan. Trust me.)
- 12 points - Beer #1-25, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, May 16, 1993
Amber, foamy. Alcoholic, malty-sweet aromas. Tastes very sweet, too much like a Doppelbock. Maibock should be lighter, not as sweet as this one.
-
Märzen (bottled)
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 16 points - Beer #27-2211, Willow Glen Liquors, San Jose CA, September 6, 1997
Brown, clear, moderate carbonation, nice head. Caramelly, spicy aroma. Real good body. Sweet, brown, and bittered just right. This may be the best Sudwerk beer I've had.
-
Märzen
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 13 points - Beer #16-1208, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, September 24, 1995
Red-amber, low head. Fruity, watermelon nose. Caramel, medium body. Very low carbonation. Not a lot of character.
- 14.5 points - Beer #9-626, at the brewery, November 28, 1994
Amber, some haze. Slight carbonation. Good head. Spicy chocolate aroma! Malty flavors...caramel. Good mild bitter finish.
- 12.5 points - Beer #7-421, HopFest '94, Pleasanton CA, August 13, 1994
Good red color, head. Sharp aroma. Sour flavor note? Some caramel, but not enough. Thin.
- 15 points - Beer #6-349, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, June 15, 1994
Deep amber. Transparent. Big Bubbles. Thick head. Some caramel in aroma, but nothing much. Expected a lot more malt. Clean flavor. Caramel malt. Good medium carbonation. Not particularly bitter. Can't taste alcohol.
- 15.5 points - Beer #1-63, at the brewery, May 9, 1993
Deep amber, tiny bubbles. Malty aroma. Very strong, very malty, very bitter.
-
Beer #23-1941, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, March 1, 1993
Thin, but OK for style. Lacks maltiness that I would expect in a Märzen.
-
Oktoberfest Märzen
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 13.5 points - Beer #3-180, 1993 American Homebrewers Association Convention, Portland OR, July 27, 1993
Red. Alcoholic aroma, some caramel malt. Alcoholic flavor. Good body, but very sweet. Too too sweet.
-
Pilsner
Style 15 - Classic Pilsener
- 13.5 points - Beer #15-1103, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, July 12, 1995
Golden, big head, high carbonation. Musty aroma. Malty, noble bitterness. Gold Medal, 1995 GABF.
- 17 points - Beer #9-624, at the brewery, November 28, 1994
Pale, good head. Noble hop nose. Light body, but good flavor...balanced.
- 13 points - Beer #7-420, HopFest '94, Pleasanton CA, August 13, 1994
Quite pale. Great head. Malty aroma, some hops. Clean flavors. Inoffensive. Some malt character, but not predominant. "Bitter, light, hoppy-tasting"...nah.
-
Weizen
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 19 points - Beer #7-401, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, August 8, 1994
Hazy yellow. Huge head. Spicy nose. Very spicy flavor. Cloves, no bananas at all. Excellent body. Perfect example of style. Too bad their pub's no fun.
-
Wheat
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 13 points - Beer #15-1118, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, August 1, 1995
Yellow opaque, OK head. Bacon aroma?!? Big clove flavor, and some fried bacon! Not bad, but weird...
