My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
13.5 points overall
-
Amber (bottled)
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 12.5 points - Beer #19-1556, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, August 30, 1996
Golden-amber, very low head and carbonation. Fairly citrusy aroma, not as much as the Whistle Stop (19-1555). Good body but not very malty...hops dominate. Lots of hop flavor and a bitter-to-metallic finish.
-
Amber Alt
Style 18 - German-style Ale
- 8.5 points - Beer #1-76, St.Mary's College Beer Festival, Moraga CA, June 13, 1996
Yellow, not amber. No aroma. Sweet. Way too sweet. Seriously unremarkable.
- 13.5 points - Beer #12-916, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Dark yellow, thick head, good carbonation. Same hop aroma as Angel Tears. Good body...not much flavor until hoppy finish. 5.8% alcohol.
- 13.5 points - Beer #12-867, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, April 18, 1995
Amber, kinda hazy. Thin head. Snappy nose. Thick, very malty. Some astringency.
-
Angel Tears Wheat
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 12 points - Beer #12-915, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Clear, moderate carbonation, no head. Sweet aroma. Malty...hops don't taste particularly fresh. 6.0% alcohol.
-
Barleywine
Style 1 - Barley Wine
- 10.5 points - Beer #12-921, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Deeeep red, clear. No head. Very slightly sweet aroma. Tastes like flat Coca-Cola. Sweet, sticky. Virtually character-free. 7.5% alcohol.
- 12.5 points - Beer #10-696, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, January 7, 1995
Dark red hazy. Dark fruity aroma...plums, prunes, etc. Tastes like cough syrup. Sweet, lots of alcohol, but not very interesting.
-
Bitter
Style 7 - English Bitter
- 12 points - Beer #12-919, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Yellow-amber, low carbonation and head. Very Redhook-y in aroma and flavor. If you like Redhook ESB, this probably rates 17 points. 5.8% alcohol.
-
Dark Alt
Style 18 - German-style Ale
- 13 points - Beer #12-920, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Deep red-brown, clear, great head. Some chocolate aroma. Sweet. Chocolatey. Long sweet finish. 6.2% alcohol.
- 11 points - Beer #12-886, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, April 25, 1995
Red, good head, clear, OK carbonation. Metallic hoppy smell. Metallic flavor. Thick. Caramel, some chocolate. Not much balance at all.
-
Fest Beer
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 17 points - Beer #9-674, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, December 28, 1994
Amber, hazy, high carbonation. Nice balanced aromas! Great caramel flavor and full body. Some alcohol in the finish. Outstanding balance. Carbonation a little too high.
- 17.5 points - Beer #7-491, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, November 5, 1994
Pale amber, good head, high carbonation. Nice fruity nose. Excellent balance. Reminds me of Sierra Nevada 1994 Celebration Ale (7-0485) but not as big. VNI for a St.Stan's beer.
-
Graffiti '93
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 10 points - Beer #1-77, St.Mary's College Beer Festival, Moraga CA, June 13, 1993
Pale yellow. Big head comes from "air in the system". No aroma. Thin, bites. Almost but not quite flavorless...the hops show up after a while. As unremarkable as the Amber Alt (1-0076).
-
Graffiti Wheat
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 14 points - Beer #14-999, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, June 7, 1995
Very dark yellow opaque. Pretty tight head. Clean wheat aroma. Nice balance...bitterness comes through in finish. Wheat, then barley, then hops.
-
Pleasanton Centenni-Ale
Style 7 - English Bitter
- 14 points - Beer #6-358, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, June 24, 1994
Amber-red, no head. Strong spicy hop aroma. Bitter. Good body. Lingering bitter finish, some (not much) residual sweetness. "Like St.Stan's Bitter," sez the bartender. "Sweet," sez Gerry.
-
Pleasanton Centenni-Ale Unfiltered
Style 7 - English Bitter
- 15 points - Beer #7-414, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, August 13, 1994
Amber opaque. Certainly unfiltered! Spicy hop nose! Very hoppy. Body maybe too light to carry it. Carbonation a touch too high.
-
Porter
Style 9 - Porter
- 15.5 points - Beer #12-922, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Black. Thick brown head lasts forever. Coffee aroma. Extremely creamy, great black flavors. This is a Stout, and not a bad one. 5.0% alcohol.
-
Red Sky Ale (beer engine)
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 15.5 points - Beer #11-827, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, March 26, 1995
Completely clear, red. Enormous head. Spicy aromas, with caramel. Thick, obviously hand-pumped. Nice caramel and bitter balance. (Note: they do call it "hand-pumped", not "cask-conditioned".)
-
Red Sky Ale (bottled)
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 13 points - Beer #20-1557, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, August 30, 1996
Red, OK head, high carbonation. Aroma just like the last two (19-1555 and 19-1556) - lots of citrus - with a dose of caramel. Hop flavor, metallic bitterness...not a lot else.
-
Red Sky Ale
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 15 points - Beer #12-918, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Red amber, high carbonation, good head. Mild hop aroma. Best balance so far. Long(ish) bitter finish.
- 16.5 points - Beer #9-602, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, November 13, 1994
Red-brown, good head and carbonation. Some caramel aroma. Good Brown Ale...ish. Hops...well-balanced. Actually a pretty good beer.
-
VHB
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 15.5 points - Beer #30-2427, Celebrator Beer News 10th Anniversary, Berkeley CA, February 28, 1998
Very Hoppy Bitter. Amber, almost opaque, OK head. Very herbal-spicy aroma. Good body, enormous spicy hop blast that echoes forever.
-
Virgin Amber Alt
Style 18 - German-style Ale
- 12.5 points - Beer #12-917, at the brewery, May 5, 1995
Unfiltered version of Amber Alt. Dark yellow opaque, thick white head. Clean aroma. Slightly spicy flavor. Munich malt? 5.8% alcohol.
-
Whistle Stop Ale (bottled)
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 12.5 points - Beer #19-1555, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, August 30, 1996
Golden, weak head, moderate carbonation. Very citrusy aroma. Lots of hop flavor, bitterness. Rather thin...needs more body to carry the hops. Long bitter finish.
-
Whistle Stop Ale
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 15.5 points - Beer #14-991, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, May 30, 1995
Amber, clear, very low carbonation. Good head. Fresh Cascade aroma! Good body, finishes too quick. Nice balance while it lasts.
