Their Downtown Brown is about the best Brown around. Be sure to check out Humboldt Brewing while you're there...these two breweries were the impetus for my 1992 Beer Odyssey.
Directions: Highway 101 North into Eureka, about six hours north of San Francisco. Eureka's Fourth Street runs parallel to and is a block or so north of Highway 101. Lost Coast is on the north side of Fourth Street.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
16.5 points overall
-
Amber Ale
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 15 points - Beer #12-882, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, April 25, 1995
Red-amber, good white head. Clear. Herbal nose. Good flavors, body a little thin. Good balance.
-
Downtown Brown (bottled)
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 16.5 points - Beer #19-1522, Willow Glen Liquors, San Jose CA, June 19, 1996
Dark red, low carbonation, almost no head. Brown sugar and brown malt aromas. Very low carbonation, a little bitter. Good malty flavor and brown malt finish. Label is punched "February 1996". Thanks to Paris Cunningham for bringing this beer to Hawai`i for me!

Downtown Brown
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 16.5 points - Beer #10-725, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, January 21, 1995
Deep red. Sweet brown aroma, a little spicy. Reasonably thick body and brown flavors. Some maple?
- 20 points - Beer #1-64, St.Mary's College Beer Festival, Moraga CA, June 13, 1993
Nice dark brown, great head. Chocolatey-malty aroma...Cascades? Thick and smooth. Lots of malt sweetness, but not cloying at all. Mildly bitter finish. Defines the style...beats Newcastle hands-down.
-
Beer #31-2517, Lyon's Brewery, Dublin CA, September 28, 1992
Hoo Boy! It's brilliant. Not as sweet as most Browns.
-
Beer #30-2491, at the brewery, August 15, 1992
Not nearly as sweet as the Dunkel Hefeweizen. An excellent Brown! I like it better than the Hefe.
-
Dunkel Hefeweizen
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
-
Beer #30-2490, at the brewery, August 15, 1992
Very caramelly. Reminds me of the Brown...?
-
Eight-Ball Stout
Style 11 - Stout
-
Beer #30-2492, at the brewery, August 15, 1992
Too burnt/astringent.
-
Eight-Ball Stout (bottled)
Style 11 - Stout
- 20 points - Beer #26-2139, The Liquor Collection, Honolulu HI, August 13, 1997
Black, thick brown head. Coffee, hoppy aromas. Real smooth, real roasty. Lots of coffee flavor with chocolate behind it. Very well-balanced roasty-hoppy finish. Bottled March 1997.
-
Great White Beer (bottled)
Style 2 - Belgian / French Ale
- 18 points - Beer #29-2345, The Liquor Collection, Honolulu HI, October 18, 1997
Yellow, translucent, high carbonation, thick head. Very spicy aroma, with a bit of orange. Good body, great mix of spices and wheat. Pretty sweet. Excellent! Be sure to get all the yeast out of the bottle and into the glass. A little drier, and it just might be perfect. Bottled July 1997.
-
Hefeweizen
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 19 points - Beer #1-65, St.Mary's College Beer Festival, Moraga CA, June 13, 1993
Hazy yellow to spec. Slightly flowery/estery? VNI! VVNI! Much better than I remember!
-
Beer #30-2489, at the brewery, August 15, 1992
Good smooth American style. Thick, just sweet enough. VGI (Very Good Indeed).
-
Pale Ale
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
-
Beer #30-2488, at the brewery, August 15, 1992
Very good pale, heavy body, light taste, well hopped
-
Pale Ale (bottled)
Style 6 - American-style Pale Ale
- 11.5 points - Beer #19-1521, Willow Glen Liquors, San Jose CA, June 18, 1996
Yellow-amber, very hazy, OK head. Very fruity nose. Fruity and fairly bitter, with not a lot of body...like my earliest attempts at homebrewing. Not that that's necessarily bad, but there are certainly more characterful beers around. Thanks to Paris Cunningham for bringing this beer to Hawai`i for me!
-
Raspberry Brown
Style 21 - Fruit / Vegetable Beer
- 12.5 points - Beer #14-1003, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, May 26, 1995
Very dark red-brown. OK head. Raspberry Hi-C aroma. Hi-C flavors in start, tart brown finish. Not a good match.
