My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
16.0 points overall
-
McEwan's Export
Style 5 - English-style Pale Ale
- 18 points - Beer #7-432, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, September 19, 1994
Amber, clear, great white head. Perfumey, spicy nose. Very chewy. Very clean. Very tasty. VNI! I had forgotten...
- 16 points - Beer #2-133, Lyon's Brewery, Dublin CA, July 5, 1993
Quite amber, quite thick head. Good flowery hop aroma, not at all overpowering. Thin, but good crystal flavors. Nice carbonation bite without being fizzy. Hops well in background. Not really a "16", but close enough today.
-
McEwan's Scottish Ale (bottled)
Style 8 - Scottish Ale
- 15 points - Beer #34-3048, Cock and Bull Publick House, Green Bay WI, August 22, 1998
Brownish, moderate head. Strong chocolate aroma. Thick, pretty sweet, lots of caramel and lots of chocolate.
-
Newcastle Brown (bottled)
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 12 points - Beer #32-2601, Siebel Institute, Chicago IL, April 1, 1998
Red-brown, low carbonation and head. Smells sweet, roasty, papery. Medium body, stale...like a wet dog.
- 16 points - Beer #17-1332, Moloka`i Wines and Spirits Unlimited, Kaunakakai HI, March 17, 1996
Deep red, fairly low carbonation, fairly high head. Some alcohol in nose, maybe some fusels? Brown sugar behind that. Good body, very sweet. Fair amount of brown sugar flavor, and a hint of alcohol. Carbonation and bitterness work well as afterthoughts. Some brown malt flavor in finish.

Newcastle Brown
Style 4 - Mild / Brown Ale
- 16 points - Beer #11-778, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, February 15, 1995
Red-brown, clear. Thin head, some carbonation. Brown aroma, a little spicy. Sweet and hoppy. Long sweet finish. Some alcohol. Smoky, like whisky!
- 18.5 points - Beer #2-134, Lyon's Brewery, Dublin CA, July 5, 1993
Red-brown. Even smells brown! Brown sugar aroma. Brown sugar very apparent in flavor. Full, sweet, good carbonation without being fizzy. THE Brown Ale. "Tek t'Dog Oot Fer A Walk."
-
Theakston's XB Bitter
Style 7 - English Bitter
-
19 points - Beer #13-937, Crown City, Pasadena CA, May 6, 1995
Amber, some haze, big nitro head. Ooooooo...smooth hop aroma. This is what a Bitter is all about. Smooth, hoppy, bitter, clean.
-
Younger's Tartan Special (bottled)
Style 8 - Scottish Ale
-
14.5 points - Beer #19-1514, Willow Glen Liquors, San Jose CA, June 17, 1996
Brown, low carbonation, OK head. Brown sugar aroma. A little thin, but good malty flavors. Hops show up for the finish, but it's not bitter. Maybe a hint of smoke, but no more. "Younger's...since 1749." Thanks to Paris Cunningham for bringing this beer to Hawai`i for me!
