Opened 1634.
Began brewing in 1634, began selling their beer in 1780. Paulaner also owns Munich's Hacker-Pschorr, which it closed in 1998.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
16.5 points overall
-
1634 Urtyp Hell
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 16.5 points - Beer #36-3561, Falling Rock, Denver CO, October 5, 2000
Pale, still, moderate head. Sulfury aroma. Light body, big hop flavor with a mild bitterness and a clean finish.
-
Bavarian Alpine Extreme (bottled)
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 16 points - Beer #18-1369, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, April 15, 1996
Amber, high carbonation, throws quite a head. Malty aroma. Big, fairly bitter, but also fairly clean. Pretty tasty. "Created Especially For Wintertime."
-
Hacker-Pschorr Weisse Bock (bottled)
Style 12 - Bock
- 16 points - Beer #36-3434, Flanagan's Stop and Shop, Appleton WI, May 3, 2000
Red-amber opaque, thick head. Smoky clove aroma. Medium body, blast of clove flavor with caramel hints behind it. Lots of malt in the finish.
-
Hefe-Weizen (bottled)
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 20 points - Beer #18-1432, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, May 3, 1996
Yellow opaque, huge head. Big clove aroma. Big body, big wheat flavor behind the big clove bite. Big beer.
-
Hefeweizen
Style 19 - German-style Wheat Beer
- 15 points - Beer #6-352, Bavarian Corner, Alameda CA, June 17, 1994
Huge frothy head. Dark yellow opaque. Much of the aroma seems to be hidden under the head! Whatever is there isn't very assertive. Interesting phenols...not really "clove", more like "rubber". Oddly not offensive. Light carbonation. Refreshing. They really pour a nice liter here.
- 17.5 points - Beer #6-344, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, May 23, 1994
Yellow-brown opaque. Thick white head. Spicy phenolic nose...cloves and others. Big body, and those phenols bite your tongue! Long fading finish. Pretty clean.
- 19 points - Beer #2-123, Lyon's Brewery, Dublin CA, July 3, 1993
Beauty: Yellow, Hefe, Head. Clovecloveclovecloveclove aroma. Yikes! Like biting into a clove cigarette! (Well, OK...without the tobacco.) Mighty fine, if you're into spices. Defines the style.
-
Oktoberfest (bottled)
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 16 points - Beer #19-1469, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, May 11, 1996
Amber, moderate carbonation, good head. Fresh malt aroma! Big and malty, but not sweet. Not quite as clean and tasty as the draught version, but not bad at all.
-
Oktoberfest
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 15 points - Beer #16-1199, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, September 18, 1995
Amber, high carbonation, OK head. Very malty aroma, noble hops, some diacetyl? Dark, bitter. Some alcohol. Carbonation bite.
- 18 points - Beer #6-353, Bavarian Corner, Alameda CA, June 17, 1994
Red-clear. Sparse carbonation. Brownish head. Very malty aroma, toasted character. Toasted malt flavor. Sweet. Long toasty finish. Hops in balance but not obvious. Strong.
-
Oktoberfest Märzen® Amber (bottled)
Style 17 - Vienna / Märzen / Oktoberfest
- 16.5 points - Beer #26-2068, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, May 10, 1997
Amber-brown, moderate carbonation, good head. Malty aroma, smoky, a little alcohol. Big body, big malty flavor. Noble hops show up late for a mildly bitter finish. The label says "ALE" and "03.98".
-
Original Munich Premium Lager (bottled)
Style 14 - German Light Lager
- 20 points - Beer #18-1431, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, May 3, 1996
Bright golden, fairly high carbonation, big head. Nice fresh malt nose! Very fresh beer. Great malt flavor, and just enough noble hopping to make it not sweet. What's wrong with it? Nothing.
- 13 points - Beer #31-2535, Gordon Biersch Brewer's Lunch #1, Palo Alto CA, Date unknown
Brilliant, thick head. Malty aroma, no hops. Thin, good malt flavor. Stale.
-
Pilsner
Style 15 - Classic Pilsener
- 17 points - Beer #6-351, Bavarian Corner, Alameda CA, June 17, 1994
Very very pale. Enormous frothy head. Very fine carbonation. Spicy hop aroma. Typical "Pilsner" character. Sweet malty notes too. Good body. Finish is very long and very bitter...almost metallic. (!) Well-balanced and mild except for finish.
- 13.5 points - Beer #2-119, Lyon's Brewery, Dublin CA, July 3, 1993
Looks very much like a Pilsner indeed. A little paler than I like. If anything has ever smelled malty-sweet, this beer is it. Noble hops present, but in the background. LOUD noble hop flavor. Body is OK, but could be heavier. (Actually, I'd cut back on the hops somewhat and leave the grain bill alone.) Comparing this with Pilsner Urquell (of course), it scores low. Comparing it to many of the other alleged Pilsners, it's a pretty good beer.
-
Salvator (bottled)
Style 12 - Bock
- 18 points - Beer #32-2698, Siebel Institute, Chicago IL, April 7, 1998
Red, low carbonation, thick head. Sweet caramel malt aroma. Thick, sweet, raisins, alcohol, woody.
- 18 points - Beer #18-1436, Kamuela Liquor Store, Kamuela HI, May 3, 1996
Red, almost no carbonation, good head. Big malt aroma, and a lot of hops. Very big beer. Sweet-ish to start, like toffee. Chocolatey-caramel flavors follow, with a good hop finish. Hint of alcohol late.
-
Salvator
Style 12 - Bock
- 16.5 points - Beer #6-327, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, May 7, 1994
Deep amber. Clear. Very brown aroma. Maybe some alcohol? Big sweetness. Brown malts, alcohol. Nice balance.
- 13.5 points - Beer #2-115, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, July 1, 1993
Nice dark amber. Molasses aroma. Thick, sweet. Molasses not as prominent as in aroma. Not as bitter as it could be. Somewhat alcoholic. Rates better than 13.5, but it's not my specialty.
