Opened 1842.
Brewer: Vaclav Berka.
The Original Pilsner Beer Since 1842...the brewery itself may have been established 550 years before that. Michael Jackson rightly extolls its virtues in The New World Guide to Beer.
My Opinion Of The Beers That I've Tried:
16.5 points overall
-
Pilsner Urquell (bottled)
Style 15 - Classic Pilsener
- 13.5 points - Beer #17-1339, Moloka`i Wines and Spirits Unlimited, Kaunakakai HI, March 2, 1996
Golden, moderate carbonation, good head. Sweet malty nose, with a hint of Saaz. Big malty Pilsner, slight metallic taste, especally in finish. Lots of sweetness, not a lot of hop flavor.

Pilsner Urquell
Style 15 - Classic Pilsener
- 16 points - Beer #32-2692, Siebel Institute, Chicago IL, April 7, 1998
Golden, fairly high carbonation, moderate head. Saaz, diacetyl aroma. Medium body, lots of Saaz flavor and bitterness, nice malty background.
- 16.5 points - Beer #12-887, The HopYard, Pleasanton CA, April 26, 1995
Gold, lots of carbonation. Fresh aroma, very slightly perfumey. Great body...vegetal hops. Some fruitiness in finish.
- 19 points - Beer #10-711, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, January 15, 1995
Darker than pale, bordering on amber almost. Huge head. Much hoppier nose than Carlsberg. Saaz obvious here. Bitter start, with lots of chewy malt. Quick very clean finish.
- 18.5 points - Beer #7-498, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, November 7, 1994
Deep yellow, good carbonation. Sulfury aroma...malty, almost sweet. Big and malty. Clean bitter finish.
- 15.5 points - Beer #1-91, Pacific Coast Brewing, Oakland CA, June 21, 1993
Pale yellow, but a shade darker than Carlsberg. Also very light carbonation. Aroma is not even as assertive as Carlsberg. Still, quite nice, though benign. Very full body. Very malty, but the hops keep the sweetness in check. I think this is the better beer (vs Carlsberg) but I'm hard-pressed to say why. I think the taste is not as benign as Carlsberg, although Carlsberg might have the better balance, Pilsner Urquell being much more malty.
