Where to Actually Buy Oktoberfest Beer: A Store-by-Store Availability Guide

Not every beer on our 30-beer Oktoberfest ranking is sitting on the shelf at your local grocery store. Some are in every gas station cooler in the country come September, and some are legally impossible to buy outside a single state. Here is an honest breakdown of where each tier actually shows up, so you are not driving to three stores looking for something that was never going to be there. If you want the non-alcoholic side of the shelf too, we cover that separately in our non-alcoholic Oktoberfest roundup, and if price is the deciding factor, our budget vs splurge breakdown ranks the same beers by what they actually cost.

Tier 1: Grocery Stores, Target and Walmart (Widest Availability)

Samuel Adams Octoberfest and Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest Festbier are the two safest bets in the entire category. Both are seasonal releases from national craft breweries with grocery distribution built for exactly this: Kroger, Food Lion, Giant Eagle, Wegmans and most regional chains stock one or both from roughly August through October. Leinenkugel’s Oktoberfest and Great Lakes Oktoberfest follow close behind, especially in the Midwest where both brands have a strong home-turf presence. If you only have 10 minutes and a regular grocery run, these four are your best chance of walking out with something.

Tier 2: Total Wine, Specialty Beer Shops and World Market (German Imports)

The actual Munich imports (Paulaner, Ayinger, Hofbrau, Hacker-Pschorr, Spaten, Warsteiner, Weihenstephaner, Erdinger) rarely show up at a standard grocery store. Total Wine carries the widest German beer selection of any US chain and is the single most reliable stop for this tier, followed by dedicated beer shops and World Market locations that run seasonal import sections. Total Wine’s own site lets you check per-store stock before you drive over, which is worth doing since inventory swings a lot by location. If your town has a specialty bottle shop that prides itself on imports, check there before assuming a big chain will carry it.

Tier 3: Regional Craft, Best Found Close to Home

Karbach Karbachtoberfest is a Texas brand first and a national one a distant second, Devils Backbone Octoberfest leans heavily mid-Atlantic and Virginia, Schell’s Oktoberfest is a Midwest staple that gets much harder to find the further you are from Minnesota, and Von Trapp Oktoberfest ships from Vermont with a footprint that favors the Northeast. These are not beers to plan a trip around unless you already live in their home region. If you are traveling for Oktoberfest season, this is a good excuse to try the local pick instead of hunting for a beer that travels better from home.

Tier 4: Single-State Exclusives

New Glarus Brewing has never distributed outside Wisconsin, on purpose, since the brewery was founded. Staghorn Octoberfest is not rare because of high demand outstripping supply, it is rare because New Glarus made a business decision decades ago to only sell inside state lines. If you are not in Wisconsin, the only realistic way to try it is to have someone bring you a can, or to plan a trip around it. Narragansett Fest Marzen Lager is a lighter version of the same idea: legally available in more places, but distribution is still heavily concentrated in New England, so do not expect to find it much past that region.

Tier 5: Order Direct or Through Delivery Apps

For anything in tiers 2 through 4 that your local stores simply do not carry, most of these breweries either ship direct or can be checked on delivery apps like Instacart and Saucey, which pull from local liquor store inventory rather than stocking anything themselves. Checking the brewery’s own site for a store locator is worth the extra two minutes before writing a beer off as unavailable; several of the regional picks above (Karbach, Devils Backbone, Schell’s) maintain their own locator tools that are more accurate than a general grocery search.

FAQs

Where can I buy German Oktoberfest imports like Paulaner or Ayinger?

Total Wine has the most consistent selection of German Marzen imports of any US retailer, followed by dedicated beer shops and World Market locations running seasonal import sections. Check per-store stock online before driving over.
