Stella Egyptian Beer Review: Egypt’s Best-Selling Beer Since 1897

3.5/5
Stella, Egypt’s own beer since 1897, is a light, easy-drinking pale lager that has held its position as the country’s default beer for well over a century. Do not confuse it with Belgium’s Stella Artois, a completely different beer with a similar name.

Stella has been brewed in Cairo by Al Ahram Beverages Company since 1897, making it one of the oldest continuously produced beer brands in the Middle East and North Africa. It remains by far Egypt’s most popular beer, accounting for roughly a third of the country’s total beer consumption. It is worth being clear up front that this Stella has nothing to do with Belgium’s Stella Artois beyond a shared name and a star on the label; the Egyptian Stella is a separate beer with its own distinct 129-year history.

How It Tastes

Stella pours a light gold with a modest white head. The aroma is clean and grainy with a faint sweetness. On the palate it is light-bodied and gently malty upfront, moving into a crisp, dry finish with low bitterness, built to be refreshing in Egypt’s heat rather than complex. It is comparable in character to many other regional adjunct lagers, but its long, consistent history and dominant local market share give it a cultural weight that the beer itself, on taste alone, would not suggest.

More than a century of history is riding on a beer this light, and it earns that history through sheer consistency rather than complexity.
