Star Lager Review: Nigeria’s Number One Beer

3.6/5
Star Lager is a clean, easy-drinking pale lager with real staying power, Nigeria’s oldest and best-selling beer brand. It is built for warm weather and social drinking rather than complexity, and it delivers exactly that.

Star Lager has been brewed by Nigerian Breweries, part of Heineken, since 1949, making it Nigeria’s first locally brewed beer and still its best-selling one. It has built a reputation as the beer of celebrations and social occasions across Nigeria, marketed under the line that Star is always the centre of attraction. In the last few years the brand has pushed into the US, landing in Total Wine, H-E-B in Texas, and independent African import retailers as the Nigerian diaspora market has grown.

How It Tastes

Star Lager pours a bright pale gold with a light, quickly fading head, typical of a beer built for hot climates. The nose is mild, mostly grain and a touch of sweet corn from the adjuncts in the grain bill. On the palate it is clean and light-bodied, with a gentle malt sweetness upfront and a crisp, dry finish that leaves almost no bitterness behind. At 5.1% ABV it runs a bit stronger than it tastes, which makes it easy to underestimate over a few rounds. It is not a beer built for sipping and analyzing, it is built for hot afternoons and long tables of company.

It disappears fast in the glass and faster in the heat, which is exactly the point of a beer brewed for Lagos afternoons.
