Okell’s Nectar Review: The Gold Medal New World IPA

3.5/5
Score reflects aggregated drinker ratings, not a first-hand tasting. Nectar is a 4.0% ABV New World IPA that has picked up a gold medal and Isle of Man country win at the 2026 World Beer Awards, and drinkers rate it as a solidly above-average example of the style.

Nectar is Okell’s New World IPA, built on Citra, Motueka and Nectaron hops sourced from the US and New Zealand rather than the traditional English hops that run through most of the brewery’s range. It won gold and was named Isle of Man country winner at the 2026 World Beer Awards, following a silver medal at the 2024 London Beer Competition. Here is what it actually tastes like, and where it fits against other IPAs.

How It Tastes

Nectar pours a pale gold with a bright white head. Other drinkers consistently describe the same citrus-forward profile: orange and grapefruit up front, with pine and citrus rind giving it a noticeable bitterness for a 4% beer. One taster noted it “starts orange then a grassy bitter hits pretty shortly after, then finishes more grapefruit,” with a body on the thinner side and a dry finish. That thinner body is a fair tradeoff for the sessionable strength; Okell’s own description promises “juicy fruitiness” and a “smooth-bodied” beer, and the tropical hop character genuinely comes through from the first sip.

“Citrus dominant. Orange, grapefruit, lemon and lime, pine and citrus rinds giving it a nice bitterness. Pleasant easy drinker.”, a taster’s note

Pros
  • Gold medal and Isle of Man country winner at the 2026 World Beer Awards
  • Genuinely tropical, citrus-forward hop character from Citra, Motueka and Nectaron
  • Low 4.0% ABV makes it an easy session beer
  • Also picked up silver at the 2024 London Beer Competition
Cons
  • Body reads thin to some tasters given the hop intensity
  • Only sold on draft or in cans through Okell’s own pubs and IOM/UK stockists, not exported to the US
  • Newer to the range than Okell’s heritage cask ales, so it has a smaller rating base overall
Final score3.5 / 5
