Okell’s MPA Review: The Manx Pale Ale With a Tropical Twist

3.4/5
Score reflects aggregated drinker ratings, not a first-hand tasting. MPA (Manx Pale Ale) is a 3.6% ABV cask blonde ale that rates as a solid, well above-average session beer with over 2,400 drinker ratings.

MPA, short for Manx Pale Ale, is one of Okell’s core cask beers and its most-rated beer among drinkers after the flagship Bitter. At just 3.6% ABV it is built as a session beer, but it carries a distinctly tropical hop character that is unusual for something this low in alcohol, closer to a modern golden ale than a traditional English pale ale.

How It Tastes

MPA pours a very light gold, almost straw blonde. Both Okell’s own tasting notes and independent drinkers describe the same profile: aromas of mango, passion fruit and papaya, with an initial sweetness that gives way to a dry hop finish. One cask ale reviewer who tried it at Stockport Beer Festival called it “completely” different from the muddled, grassy taste he expected from a blonde ale, noting a “lovely hoppy, citrusy nose” carried through to a distinctly tropical palate. Other tasters echo that with notes of “mango, citrus, papaya, passion fruit and malt” and a “long moderate bitter finish.”

“It made for very easy drinking and is now a particular favourite session beer when I’m in the Okell’s pub Thomas Rigby’s in Liverpool. Recommended.”, ale.org.uk review
