Kingfisher Premium Lager is the beer most people picture when they think of Indian beer, and for good reason: one in every two beers sold in India carries this label. United Breweries, now majority owned by Heineken, brews it across a network of more than 60 licensed breweries, which is how a single beer ends up this consistent from Goa to Delhi.

The full review
This is a session lager built for heat, not complexity. The special Indian yeast strain UBL uses gives it a slightly fuller, breadier body than a typical macro lager, with a touch of wheat and citrus sitting under a gentle bitterness. It is not trying to be a craft beer, and it does not need to be. Kingfisher’s whole job is to be cold, reliable and everywhere, and it does that job better than any other beer in the country.

Kingfisher also has a bigger family worth knowing: Kingfisher Ultra is the smoother, more premium lager, Kingfisher Strong is the 8% ABV version that actually outsells the original in volume terms, and Kingfisher Ultra Max sits between the two. If you only try one, start with the Premium since it is the one you’ll find stocked outside India too.

What to eat with it
Kingfisher’s light body and citrus edge make it a genuinely good match for Indian food, not just a beer that happens to be Indian. Try it with tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, or a mild butter chicken. It also holds its own next to fried snacks like samosas and pakoras, where the carbonation cuts through the oil.

The right glass
A tall pilsner or straight pint glass, poured hard enough to build a decent head. Kingfisher is served ice cold across India, often straight from the bottle at a dhaba or roadside stall, but a glass brings out the aroma if you want the full picture.
Kingfisher Premium Lager FAQs
Is Kingfisher the most popular beer in India?
Yes. United Breweries, the maker of Kingfisher, holds roughly 46-52% of India’s organized beer market, more than any other brewer, and Kingfisher Strong alone is described by industry data as India’s single largest-selling beer brand.
Is Kingfisher Premium the same as Kingfisher Strong?
No. Kingfisher Premium is a standard 4.8% ABV pale lager. Kingfisher Strong is a separate, stronger variant at up to 8% ABV with a bolder malt profile, and it is actually the bigger seller of the two in India.
The verdict
Kingfisher Premium Lager is not trying to win craft beer awards, and it does not need to. It is the beer that built India’s modern beer industry, and it remains a genuinely solid, easy-drinking lager that pairs well with the food it was built around. A fair pickup if you want to taste the beer that half of India is actually drinking.
