Unibroue Don de Dieu Review: A Strong Canadian Wheat Tripel

4.5/5
Don de Dieu is a strong Canadian wheat tripel, a smooth, hazy golden ale that blends the creamy softness of a wheat beer with the fruit, spice and warmth of a tripel at 9%.

Don de Dieu, the Gift of God, is Unibroue’s strong wheat ale, named after the ship that carried the founder of Quebec City. It is a tripel brewed with wheat, which gives it a lovely creamy softness on top of the usual tripel fruit and spice. It is a slightly gentler, rounder cousin of La Fin du Monde. I picked one up for this guide.

The full review

It pours a hazy golden with a thick, creamy white head. The aroma is soft and inviting, wheat, ripe pear, clove and a honeyed malt note.

The flavour is smooth and rounded. The wheat gives it a creamy, soft body that carries the tripel character of orchard fruit, spicy clove and a honeyed sweetness, finishing dry and lively from the bottle conditioning. At 9% it is warming but the wheat keeps it gentle.

That creamy softness is what sets it apart from La Fin du Monde. Where the tripel is bright and sparkling, Don de Dieu is rounder and silkier, a slightly more approachable take on the strong Belgian-style ale.

Another world-class Belgian-style ale from Unibroue. If you find some tripels a bit sharp, this smoother wheat version is a lovely alternative.

Where La Fin du Monde is bright and sparkling, Don de Dieu is rounder and silkier.
