It pours a deep amber-copper with a persistent head. The aroma is rich and layered, citrus and pine hops sitting over a honeyed, almost boozy malt sweetness.
The flavour is big in every direction. There is a substantial caramel and honey malt backbone, a warming alcohol note and, thanks to the continual hopping, a smooth and rounded bitterness rather than a sharp one. It is rich and complex and asks to be sipped.
At 9% this is not a session beer and it does not pretend to be. It is a slow, warming beer to enjoy one of, ideally when you have time to sit with it. The continual hopping keeps the bitterness civilised despite the size.
It is one of the beers that defined the imperial IPA category and it still holds up. Rich, warming and satisfying, it is a benchmark double IPA to measure others against.
