Broken Skull IPA Review: Steve Austin’s West Coast IPA, Tested

4/5
American IPA, 6.7% ABV, about 220 calories. Citra, Cascade and Chinook hops give it big citrus flavor with an easy, non-punishing finish.

Broken Skull IPA is a collaboration between WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin and El Segundo Brewing Company in El Segundo, California. It leans into Austin’s Stone Cold persona, right down to the barbed-wire label art and the cracked skull logo, but the beer itself is a straightforward, well-made West Coast-style IPA.

The full review

Broken Skull IPA pours a hazy gold with a solid off-white head. The aroma is all citrus and pine, driven hard by the Citra and Cascade hops, with a faint grapefruit bite underneath.

The palate follows the nose closely: bright citrus and resinous hop flavor up front, a firm but not overwhelming bitterness in the middle, and a clean, dry finish that keeps it drinkable. The malt backbone is light enough to stay out of the way.

Compared to other celebrity-branded beers, Broken Skull IPA is a genuine, well-constructed West Coast IPA rather than a bland lager riding on a famous name, closer in quality to something like Sierra Nevada Torpedo than a typical novelty release.

“A real West Coast IPA that happens to have Stone Cold Steve Austin’s name on it, not the other way around.”, Beer Is My Life
