Baltika 7 Review: One of Russia’s Leading Export Lagers

3.5/5
Baltika 7 is a clean, slightly stronger pale lager with real malt depth, one of the most recognizable numbered beers from Russia’s largest brewer. It is straightforward but well made, built for a market that drinks a lot of it.

Baltika Breweries, based in St. Petersburg and now part of Carlsberg, brews its beers under a numbering system rather than individual names, with each number representing a different style and strength. Baltika 7, labeled Export Lager, is one of the most widely available of the lineup internationally and one of the brands most people mean when they say Baltika without specifying a number. Baltika has historically held the largest share of Russia’s beer market of any single brewer, and the 7 is one of its most exported labels, turning up at specialty retailers like H-E-B in parts of the US.

How It Tastes

Baltika 7 pours a clear pale gold with a moderate white head. The aroma leans grainy and slightly sweet, with a faint floral hop note. On the palate it delivers noticeably more malt character and body than a standard American lager, with a smooth sweetness upfront that gives way to a clean, moderately dry finish. At 5.4% ABV it runs stronger than most lagers in its category, though the alcohol stays well hidden behind the malt. It reads as a genuinely well-made export lager rather than a bare-bones mass-market beer.

It hides its strength well behind real malt character, which is probably why it travels better than most Russian exports.
