Your State’s Best-Rated Brewery: All 50 States, Ranked

Everything else in this data series has come from a fixed sample, 758 US breweries tracked across Google, Yelp, Foursquare and Untappd. That’s a great way to find a national pattern, and a bad way to answer a much more local question: who actually has the best-rated brewery in your own city? For that, our 16-per-state sample isn’t deep enough, so we went straight to Google Places for a full, live pull covering all 50 states plus Washington, DC, one flagship city per state, no sampling involved. Every listed business currently marked operational, with at least 50 Google reviews, was in the running.

The 50-review floor matters here more than it did in our national work. A brewery with 6 reviews and a perfect 5.0 average tells you almost nothing, one bad night from a single reviewer could swing it a full star. Requiring 50 reviews before a brewery qualifies for these rankings cuts out that noise while still leaving room for newer, smaller spots to compete on a level footing with long-running names. In a handful of smaller markets, Jackson, Mississippi and Jackson, Wyoming among them, that floor leaves only one or two qualifying breweries in the running, which we’ve noted rather than hidden.

The headline finding: seven states, Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri and New Mexico, each have a top brewery sitting at a perfect 5.0 out of 5. At the other end, New Jersey’s best-rated qualifying brewery tops out at 4.4, the lowest ceiling of any state in the country. The national average for a state’s single best brewery is 4.87 out of 5, which says more about how generous brewery-goers are with stars than about beer quality itself.

A Closer Look: Five Flagship Cities

Five markets got the deep-dive treatment below, full write-ups with their own leaderboard graphics. The other 46 states and DC are covered in the interactive tool and the full data download further down the page.

Portland, Oregon

Portland's top 5 breweries by Google rating

Duality Brewing & Chisme tops Portland at 4.9 out of 5 across 102 reviews, in a city with dozens of qualifying breweries competing for the top spot. Portland’s craft beer scene is old and dense enough that a newer name outscoring long-established taprooms is itself a story worth a local outlet picking up.

Denver, Colorado

Denver's top 5 breweries by Google rating

Monolith Brewing leads Denver at 4.9 out of 5 on 263 reviews, the deepest review base of any top-5 finisher across all five cities in this pilot, meaning that rating is backed by more real customer volume than any other winner here.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville's top 5 breweries by Google rating

Diatribe Brewing Co. tops Asheville at 4.9 out of 5, in a city that’s been calling itself a beer capital since long before it was a national talking point. Asheville has one of the highest brewery-per-capita rates in the country, so a 4.9 average here is competing against a genuinely deep, well-established field.

San Diego, California

San Diego's top 5 breweries by Google rating

Barley & Sword Brewing Company takes San Diego with a perfect 5.0 out of 5 across 137 reviews, in one of the country’s most saturated craft beer markets, a market our hours-vs-rating study already flagged as home to some of the longest weekly hours in our national sample.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Grand Rapids' top 5 breweries by Google rating

Sacred Springs Micro Taproom leads Grand Rapids with a perfect 5.0 out of 5 on 162 reviews. Grand Rapids is also home to Founders Brewing Co., the second-most checked-in brewery in our full national dataset from the Brewery Index, though its scale puts it in a different category from these smaller, hyper-local standouts, exactly the kind of split our popularity paradox study found nationwide: the biggest name in a market and the best-rated one are rarely the same business.

How This Is Different From the Rest of the Series

Every other piece in this series, the popularity paradox, the social media study, the closure-risk score, the confirmed nanobrewery closures, works from the same fixed 758-brewery sample. That sample is great for national patterns and genuinely bad for hyper-local questions, since it only covers 16 breweries per state. This piece pulls a full, live, unsampled list for one flagship city per state directly from Google Places, meaning every qualifying brewery in that city (minimum 50 reviews, currently operational) actually got a shot at the top spot, not just the ones that happened to land in our national sample.

Where This Goes Next

This started as a pilot of 5 cities and is now a full 50-state-plus-DC ranking. The same method works for any individual US city on request too, drilling down past a state’s flagship market into a specific neighborhood or metro area, and could support standalone one-pager pages built specifically for local press outreach, a much stronger hometown-pride angle than a national ranking could ever be. Tell us which city matters most to you and we’ll build it out properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t my city’s biggest or most famous brewery at the top of its list?

These rankings are purely by Google star rating, with a minimum 50-review floor to filter out brand-new or barely-reviewed spots. A brewery can be huge, famous, and still rank behind a smaller, newer spot with a higher average rating and enough reviews to qualify.

How is this different from the main 758-brewery Brewery Index?

The Brewery Index samples 16 breweries per state nationwide, useful for national patterns, not built to answer “who’s the best in my city” with any real completeness. This pilot pulls every qualifying brewery in one city at a time directly from Google Places, live, with no sampling.

Can this be done for any city?

Yes. The method is the same Google Places API pull used here, and it works for any US city on request, not just the flagship city we picked for each state.

Why does my state only show one or two qualifying breweries?

The 50-review floor is a data quality choice, not a coverage gap. Smaller markets, Jackson, Mississippi and Jackson, Wyoming among them, simply have fewer breweries that have cleared 50 Google reviews yet. We’d rather show a short, honest list than pad it with under-reviewed spots.

Why is New Jersey’s top brewery rated lower than every other state’s?

At 4.4 out of 5, it’s the lowest ceiling in the country. That’s a reflection of one specific, dense, review-heavy market rather than a knock on New Jersey brewing generally, a large, mature market like this one tends to accumulate more critical reviews over time than a newer or smaller scene does.
