How Many Beers Equal a Bottle of Wine? The Real Math

On average, five 12 oz beers at 5% ABV equal one standard 750ml bottle of wine at 12% ABV in total alcohol content. That number moves a lot depending on the actual ABV of both drinks, so here is the real math.

The Actual Math Behind the Comparison

Alcohol content comes down to pure alcohol volume, not the volume of the drink itself. A 750ml bottle of wine at 12% ABV contains 90ml of pure alcohol. A 12 oz (355ml) beer at 5% ABV contains about 17.75ml of pure alcohol. Divide 90 by 17.75 and you land on roughly 5 beers to match one bottle of wine.

Push the wine to 14% ABV, which is common for a lot of California reds and Zinfandels, and the math shifts to about 5.9 beers. Drop it to an 11.5% white wine and it moves down to around 4.9 beers.

What Counts as a Standard Drink

In the US, a standard drink is defined as 14 grams of pure alcohol, which works out to a 12 oz beer at 5% ABV, a 5 oz glass of wine at 12% ABV, or a 1.5 oz shot of 40% spirit. Using that definition, a 750ml bottle of wine at 12% ABV holds about 5 standard drinks, which lines up closely with the 5-beer comparison above since a 12 oz beer and a 5 oz wine pour carry almost identical alcohol content at those ABVs.

The short version: a standard 12% wine bottle equals about 5 standard 5% beers. Stronger wine or stronger beer shifts that ratio in either direction.

Why Craft Beer Changes the Answer

The 5-beer figure assumes a 5% ABV beer, which covers most domestic lagers and light beers. Craft beer runs much higher on average. A 6.5% IPA needs only about 3.8 beers to match a 12% wine bottle, and an 8% double IPA gets there in just 3.1 beers. A hazy or double IPA in particular can carry as much alcohol per can as a large glass of wine, which is easy to underestimate since it drinks like a regular beer.

FAQ

How many beers equal one glass of wine, not a whole bottle?

One 12 oz beer at 5% ABV is roughly equal to one standard 5 oz glass of 12% ABV wine. A bottle holds about 5 glasses, so the beer-to-glass ratio is close to 1 to 1.

Does a stronger wine mean fewer beers to match it?

No, the opposite. A stronger wine has more total alcohol per bottle, so it takes more beers, not fewer, to match it.

Is a strong craft beer closer to wine in alcohol content?

Yes. A double IPA at 8% ABV or higher can carry nearly as much alcohol per can as a full glass of wine, even though it does not taste as strong.
