Greece isn’t the first country people think of for beer, but it has a real, distinct brewing scene: a handful of big lager brands that dominate every taverna fridge, plus a wave of small island and mainland breweries that have started winning international awards. Here’s both sides of it, the beers everyone actually drinks and the ones the judges are talking about.
These four lagers make up the vast majority of what’s actually poured in Greece, from Athens bars to island beach clubs.
Mythos
Olympic Brewery, 5% ABV, 17 IBU
The beer most visitors associate with Greece, and for good reason: it’s the country’s best-known export lager, with a light, grassy, floral character and a clean, slightly sweet finish. Easy-drinking by design, which is exactly why it’s everywhere.
Greece’s oldest beer brand, first brewed in 1864, and still marketed as “the first and most historic Greek beer.” A soft, balanced pale lager with a touch more bitterness than Mythos and a long, rounded aftertaste.
Marketed hard on its Greek name and origin, Alfa is a straightforward, refreshing pale lager built for hot weather drinking. There’s also an Alfa Strong (7% ABV) and an Alfa Weiss wheat beer if you want more body.
Launched in 1998 by a northern Greek brewery on a mission to make “the first 100% Greek beer” at a time when the market was dominated by licensed foreign brands. A clean, malty golden lager with a small, tight head.
Alongside the big lager brands, a newer generation of small Greek breweries has been picking up serious international recognition. Three took gold at the 2026 World Beer Awards alone.
Nissos 7 Beaufort
Cyclades Microbrewery, Tinos, 7% ABV
Brewed on the Cycladic island of Tinos by a brewery founded by journalist Maya Tsoclis and food and beverage consultant Alexandros Kouris, this is a strong, pitch-black Baltic porter named after the wind conditions in the strait between Tinos, Delos and Mykonos. It has won Gold and Country Winner in the Stout & Porter category at the World Beer Awards in both 2024 and 2025, and its sibling Nissos Apocalypsi took Bronze at the 2026 awards.
Pairs with: Grilled lamb, dark chocolate, aged cheese Serve in: Snifter or tulip glass, slightly above cellar temperature
Ammousa Tropical Stout
Ammousa Beer, Patras, 7% ABV
Founded by mechanical engineer Georgios Danos, who started out home-brewing in his basement before going commercial, Ammousa’s Tropical Stout is brewed with vanilla and coffee from Greek roaster Coffee Island. It won Gold in the Tropical Stout category at the 2026 World Beer Awards from more than 2,500 entries across 64 countries, plus a Platinum “Best Product” at Athens Fine Food Awards 2026 and a Silver at the Greek Beer Awards 2026.
Pineios Brewery is, by its own description, the first and only brewery operating in Larissa, central Greece, and it took the top spot in the Hoppy Pilsener category at the 2026 World Beer Awards under the Pineios name. Its flagship retail product, LoLa Fresh Pilsner, is an unpasteurized, unfiltered pilsner with earthy, spicy hop character, and separately won a two-star Superior Taste Award from Brussels’ International Taste Institute in 2026.
Pairs with: Grilled white fish, fresh cheeses, light salads Serve in: Pilsner glass, served fresh
What ties it together
Greece’s beer identity is really two stories running at once: a small set of long-established lager brands (Mythos, FIX Hellas, Alfa, Vergina) that most Greeks grew up drinking, and a newer wave of independent breweries on islands and in regional cities that are now winning gold medals against beers from 60-plus countries. Worth trying both sides if you get the chance, ideally with a plate of grilled fish and a view of the sea.
