Best Dark Beer Brands: 5 Worth Knowing, From Stout to Schwarzbier

“Dark beer” covers a lot of ground, from a light-bodied German schwarzbier to a thick, roasty stout. If you want the names people actually mean when they say dark beer, and where each one fits, here are five brands worth knowing.

Five widely available dark beers, from a schwarzbier to a stout.

Guinness Draught

Guinness Draught is the beer most people picture first when they think “dark beer,” even though it is lighter in calories and alcohol than most people assume. It is an Irish dry stout at 4.2% ABV, brewed with roasted barley that gives it a near-black color and a distinctive coffee-and-chocolate bitterness.

The signature creamy head comes from nitrogen rather than standard CO2 carbonation, whether it is poured from a tap or from a widget can at home. It is one of the most widely distributed dark beers in the world, brewed in 50 countries and sold in more than 150.

Yuengling Dark Brewed Porter

America’s oldest brewery has made this porter since 1829, using generous helpings of caramel and dark roasted malts. The result is a rich, creamy beer with hints of dark chocolate and light coffee, lager-brewed at 4.7% ABV and 20 IBU for a smoother, more sessionable character than a typical ale-fermented porter.

It splits the difference nicely between a heavy stout and a lighter dark lager, which is probably why it has stayed a mainstay of Yuengling’s lineup for nearly two centuries.

Newcastle Brown Ale

Launched in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter after three years of recipe development, this English brown ale blends pale malt with darker caramel malt for a smooth, nutty flavor at 4.7% ABV. It is lighter in color than a stout or porter, more reddish-brown than black, but firmly in dark-beer territory on flavor.

Now owned by Heineken, it is brewed in the Netherlands as well as the UK, and remains one of the most recognizable brown ales sold internationally.

Kostritzer Schwarzbier

Germany’s most popular black beer is a schwarzbier, a genuinely different category from stout or porter. It is bottom-fermented like a lager rather than top-fermented like an ale, which gives it an intense, elegant black color and a lasting fine-bubbled foam head while staying refreshingly light-bodied at 4.8% ABV.

The aroma leans into sage, roasted chestnut and dark chocolate, and the flavor is gently bitter with roasted, herbal notes rather than the heavy roast of a stout. It is the beer to reach for if you want dark-beer looks without a dark-beer weight.

Negra Modelo

Introduced in Mexico in 1925, Negra Modelo is a Munich dunkel-style lager brewed slightly longer than a standard lager to bring out rich caramel and dark malt notes. At 5.4% ABV it is fuller-bodied than the schwarzbier above, with a medium body and a smooth, balanced finish.

It is the default dark option in a market dominated by pale lagers, and a common pairing recommendation alongside Mexican food thanks to that caramel-forward profile.

Which One Should You Actually Try First

If you want the classic stout experience, start with Guinness Draught. If a full stout feels too heavy but you still want dark-beer character, Kostritzer Schwarzbier or Negra Modelo are the lighter-bodied route. Yuengling Porter and Newcastle Brown Ale sit in between, both easy-drinking and widely available across the US.

FAQs

What is the most popular dark beer brand?

Guinness Draught is the best-known dark beer worldwide, brewed in 50 countries and sold in more than 150. Negra Modelo and Newcastle Brown Ale are also widely recognized in their respective markets.

Is dark beer stronger than light beer?

Not necessarily. Color comes from roasted malt, not alcohol content. Guinness Draught is 4.2% ABV, actually lower than many pale lagers, while Negra Modelo at 5.4% ABV is on the stronger side of this list.

What is the difference between a stout, a porter and a schwarzbier?

Stout and porter are both top-fermented ales with roasted malt character, with stout typically using roasted unmalted barley for a sharper coffee-like bitterness. Schwarzbier is bottom-fermented like a lager, which keeps it lighter-bodied despite its black color.
